UPDATE: 'A Film By Abigail' will screen in Programme 5 as the second film in what's dubbed "Best of Fest" and described as
"Some of the best shorts from 11 years of the festival, take a trip back in time enjoying again some of the all-time favorites!"
See the schedule in full on comic-con.org.

Exclusively
announced on the TRAVELLING MAN FACEBOOK page - the best and my favourite comic book shop - my short documentary A FILM BY ABIGAIL will screen at the world renowned and highly anticipated SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON 2014! It is in the Official Selection of the San Diego International Children's Film Festival on 27th of July. If you're unfamiliar with SDCC, this is the number one event where huge announcements/panels are held for TV, film and comics. Although it's rooted in the science fiction and superhero genres first and foremost, the event has become an annual phenomenon in which celebrities, tv shows, premieres, producers, writers, directors, actors... will all be present and it is the most important popular arts convention in the world. To be a part of it with one of my films is astounding. As a comic book reader who (and will still this year) wait for the major trailers/announcements trying to one up each other, cliche or not, it is a dream come true to have my work there. To give you an idea of its magnitude and cross-form appeal here are some of the illustrious sponsors: AMC, Warner Bros, MTV, Nintendo, Showtime, Marvel, DC Entertainment, Xbox and Sony Pictures.
...this year presents many new shorts, as well as favorites celebrating the past decade of the festival. The festival features creative, exciting, and imaginative short films from around the world: animation, live action, and documentary... films from the United States, Canada, Italy, Hungary, Japan, Australia, Singapore, Spain, and beyond."

'A Film By Abigail' recently screened at WonderCon 2014, the sister event from Comic-Con International, the WonderCon Anaheim International Children's Film Festival and also at the 25th Internationales Film Festival Emden/Norderney in Germany as the opener of a British showcase of work curated by the London Short Film Festival. In addition to the San Diego Comic-Con screening, I have decided to coincide the event with the film finally releasing online publicly as well!
Some other quick notes before you leave... my science fiction short film MARS-II screens in Detroit (USA) in the Official Selection of the Detcon1 Film Festival in a few days on Saturday 19th of July at 7:14pm as part of 'Science Fiction & Fantasy Shorts #4'.

Also, following my blog about three art film commissions on the horizon, I have now successfully completed production on them. Phew! The first of which is completed and online (see left), a documentary for my 'Videos For Artists' web series, shot at BARBICAN CENTRE. My film for 'Filthy Lucre: Lost In The Nameless City' where I interpreted London's urban spaces with video/photography screened
at the event a few days ago and was met with a resounding ovation from the audience. I will be writing a separate blog about the making of the film very soon, sharing images of the process and research behind it, as it developed from ideas into a finished piece of work - - - I returned from Denmark about a week ago, and having gone there to shoot two films, I returned with FOUR!! I shot at a rarely captured place called Vallo Castle, dance on a beautiful Copenhagen beach and at a converted Chapel, now a dance studio: Danse Kapellet. There'll be more on these exciting finished or near completed film projects in an upcoming blog post.

Three Art Film Commissions: THE BARBICAN / FILTHY LUCRE / DENMARK - 7/5/2014

THREE  Art  Film  Commissions

Hello! Thanks for clicking on my blog - it means the world to me that you'd even consider giving me some of your time! I have three new films I've been commissioned to make in the next two months and I am in the midst of development for them. Here's the short rundown of these varied projects:
Picture
Outside The Back of The Barbican Centre

#1   THE  BARBICAN

On May 8th (that's tomorrow!) I'll be filming 'The Next Room' for their OPEN LAB day at renowned London arts centre THE BARBICAN in the Pit Theatre. This will be the third in my ongoing VIDEOS FOR ARTISTS series, in which I create a documentary of an exhibition/event. A document of the artist's work but also a video piece in its own right. I'm told there will be dance, body-painting and audience members recording their experiences for live broadcast. It should be very interesting to shoot and I have little specific knowledge of what to expect. I'm excited to enter the experiment fresh, sensitive to what occurs.

#2   DENMARK

I'll be travelling to Denmark at the end of June for my fourth collaboration with choreographer/dancer JULIE SCHMIDT ANDREASEN. Our first piece of work together was THE BODY CANVAS, which had its World Premiere at the 'Zealous X' exhibition (Oxo Tower Wharf, Southbank, London) in late November 2013 and was mentioned in TIME OUT LONDON. We then worked together to make the FILTHY LUCRE trailer, now viewed as a separate dance-on-camera work in itself. I see this new film as a psuedo-continuation of previous work, in which similar ideology about dance and its interaction with objects or circumstance, influence and cause conversation in the movement. It will sensitively document non-performers who have signed up to Julie's workshop to interact with the environment through dance. We will also be shooting a short film showcasing new choreography from Julie, at an incredible giant dome-like location that's very picturesque, by the sea.

#3   FILTHY LUCRE

Following the success of my FILTHY LUCRE 3 trailer, I've been asked to return and commissioned to create a new film for their fourth edition of the arts event! The night will also have an orchestra, designers and slam poets demonstrating new work and song covers. My piece will be interpreting "the city" and "urban spaces" in London. How I portray or visually discuss these elements has been left up to me as an artist to develop through an organic and rewarding process, towards a final visual piece. The film will be accompanied by a live music soundtrack of Steve Reich's 'Electric Counterpoint' on the event night of July 12th at the Bussey Building in Peckham. I want to subvert and distort common images of the city skyline and famous buildings using perspective, composition, close-up texture and different methods of mirroring/layering the imagery. The video elements will be shot in black and white, but I've also decided to include full colour photography within the film. Despite the obvious comments that will likely be there, about commercialism and expansion in the capital, I don't want to make a film that hammers home a political view or is an indictment of the place. I want the film to be interpretive and insightful for the audience, pessimistic and also optimistic; an artistically journalistic account of the city from someone only just getting-to-know it. The film will incorporate experimental efforts of inducing nostalgia, through the people and colours of the streets, captured through the innocence but unpredictability of my modified disposable cameras. I can't wait to see how all the components mix and what we might see of London through it.

Thank you for reading my blog! I appreciate the interest in my work and support. Please Like/Share if you can. I look forward to showing you the new films either online or at an event. Please follow me on Twitter @PaulEVernon to connect and keep updated.
