Exclusively announced on the TRAVELLING MAN FACEBOOK page - the best and my favourite comic book shop - my short documentary A FILM BY ABIGAIL will screen at the world renowned and highly anticipated SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON 2014! It is in the Official Selection of the San Diego International Children's Film Festival on 27th of July. If you're unfamiliar with SDCC, this is the number one event where huge announcements/panels are held for TV, film and comics. Although it's rooted in the science fiction and superhero genres first and foremost, the event has become an annual phenomenon in which celebrities, tv shows, premieres, producers, writers, directors, actors... will all be present and it is the most important popular arts convention in the world. To be a part of it with one of my films is astounding. As a comic book reader who (and will still this year) wait for the major trailers/announcements trying to one up each other, cliche or not, it is a dream come true to have my work there. To give you an idea of its magnitude and cross-form appeal here are some of the illustrious sponsors: AMC, Warner Bros, MTV, Nintendo, Showtime, Marvel, DC Entertainment, Xbox and Sony Pictures.

'A Film By Abigail' recently screened at WonderCon 2014, the sister event from Comic-Con International, the WonderCon Anaheim International Children's Film Festival and also at the 25th Internationales Film Festival Emden/Norderney in Germany as the opener of a British showcase of work curated by the London Short Film Festival. In addition to the San Diego Comic-Con screening, I have decided to coincide the event with the film finally releasing online publicly as well!

Some other quick notes before you leave... my science fiction short film MARS-II screens in Detroit (USA) in the Official Selection of the Detcon1 Film Festival in a few days on Saturday 19th of July at 7:14pm as part of 'Science Fiction & Fantasy Shorts #4'.

Also, following my blog about three art film commissions on the horizon, I have now successfully completed production on them. Phew! The first of which is completed and online (see left), a documentary for my 'Videos For Artists' web series, shot at BARBICAN CENTRE. My film for 'Filthy Lucre: Lost In The Nameless City' where I interpreted London's urban spaces with video/photography screened

at the event a few days ago and was met with a resounding ovation from the audience. I will be writing a separate blog about the making of the film very soon, sharing images of the process and research behind it, as it developed from ideas into a finished piece of work - - - I returned from Denmark about a week ago, and having gone there to shoot two films, I returned with FOUR!! I shot at a rarely captured place called Vallo Castle, dance on a beautiful Copenhagen beach and at a converted Chapel, now a dance studio: Danse Kapellet. There'll be more on these exciting finished or near completed film projects in an upcoming blog post.

After awhile since my announcement at the beginning of March, the schedule for the ANAHEIM WONDERCON INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN'S FILM FESTIVAL is finally online and A FILM BY ABIGAIL will screen on Saturday April 19th TOMORROW within Program 5. It joins a selection of work that is literally from all over the world. WonderCon is ran by Comic-Con International and it's humbling my film is a part of this huge event. As it stands, there are THREE more film festival selections I'm holding back on announcing. There's much more to come for the short documentary in the coming months with some very high profile venues and programs to talk about! I feel pretty humbled how well the film is still doing and how it continues to progress. Of course I had faith in my work, but this has far surpassed my expectations. I can't wait to share what's next and I am grateful to all the events that have promoted and screened the film.

Now, onto BIFF...

Bradford International Film Festival is genuinely a fantastic event for cinema and filmmakers. It was an honour to be a guest speaker at their Filmmakers Weekend, discussing my personal experiences of film festivals in a deliberately honest and open format. Hopefully, it helped the attending filmmakers develop. I must admit, I was nervous and tentative. Though those nerves seemed to disappear after plucking up the courage to chat to the vibrant and much respected Mark Cousins the night before, who was at the event with his new work: 'A Story of Children and Film'. Mark was incredibly genuine and pleasant to talk to, giving up time for a long informal Q&A following his screening and then we chatted on our own briefly too. I praised his magnificent love letter to innovative cinema 'The Story of Film: An Odyssey' (you don't get many chances to tell someone face-to-face how brilliant something they created is! But it's important to) and I let him know his narration was at an all-time-high Werner Herzog level of greatness - which thankfully he heartily chuckled at! I also talked to him about A FILM BY ABIGAIL, which I screened at BIFF at the beginning of my talk, and its thematical connections to his new film in terms of children, film and family.

Importantly, I saw some of the great films on offer at BIFF too. 'Brother' (1997, Dir. Alexei Balabanov) was a calculated, unsettling and impressive gangster film, which was preceded by the short film 'The Green Serpent: Of Vodka, Men and Distilled Dreams' (2013, Dir. Benny Jaberg). The short documentary is blackly funny but hammering in its account of alcohol abuse and Vodka's mysterious creative qualities. For me, it demonstrated how expressive imagery can accurately convey a message within a documentary, very interesting. Have I worded that correctly?! It's hard to articulate... you should seek out this award-winning film.

The second feature I caught (instead of going to see Sally Potter - sorry Sally!!) was the UK Premiere of feature documentary 'The Coal Miner's Day' (2013, Dir. Gael Mocaer). This was largely a claustrophobic film underground and though at points, a very funny piece. The arduous shooting, crawling deep underground with the camera is breathtaking in a rare way, the filmmaker going through a Fitzcarraldo-sized test. I don't know if I'd have the mental stamina to withstand such dangerous conditions. Another aspect to the film, are the miners, the subjects, who repeatedly discuss the documentary occurring and take advantage (or so they think) of the language barrier, as we observe aurally/visually the French director and Ukrainian coal miners. 'Love, Love, Love' (2013, Dir. Sandhya Daisy Sundaram) was the short that preceded it. An accomplished film, winning the 'Short Film Special Jury Award for Non-Fiction' at Sundance. I remember little about the film, only that I felt mesmerised by the poetry of it. It was the curation of the Russian short and Ukrainian-set feature though, that seemed to slightly overshadow the content, feeling darkly but unintentionally apt for a double bill.

Thanks for reading about Anaheim and my time at Bradford! I forgot to mention however, some of the more odd occurrences. I danced to Queen with Mark Cousins at a dillapitated empty disco (it might have been a wedding reception, it was difficult to tell) and (attempted) to help police get a criminal off a building roof opposite my top-storey hotel window... but I think they're tales for another day. UPDATE: The schedule for WonderCon Anaheim International Children's Film Festival has been released online. The film will screen on Saturday April 19th in Program 5 at 12:15pm.

A FILM BY ABIGAIL will be in the official selection at the WonderCon Anaheim International Children's Film Festival 2014 at WONDERCON 2014, the sister event to the globally renowned SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON INTERNATIONAL! "Comic-Con" is an incredibly exciting event to be associated with, as it has become a huge destination for new films, panels and announcements; possibly the biggest for genre film and TV in the entire world. The inclusion in this WonderCon film festival programme comes from the umbrella of the LA International Children's Film Festival and their desire to keep pushing the film at their associated events. Take a look at the slideshow below for examples of the event; as I'm writing this I've just seen how big the scale of it is... a LOT of people and some famous faces too!

If you're new to the film, my short documentary is about my young sister discussing a film idea after receiving a toy camera for Christmas. It was recently a part of the official selection in LONDON SHORT FILM FESTIVAL 2014, screening at the ICA. So far it has also screened at places such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Epiphany School in New York and BAFTA London (where it premiered), as well as countries such as France (where it was an award nominee) and Estonia. Look out for at least three more film festival announcements for the film coming in the next few weeks/months. Once details and confirmations are absolutely clarified for me, I'll be revealing them ASAP! It appears that this film is not set to run out of steam on the circuit just yet moving into 2014!
