San  Diego  Comic-Con  2014
OFFICIAL  SELECTION
San  Diego  International  Children's  Film  Festival

UPDATE: 'A Film By Abigail' will screen in Programme 5 as the second film in what's dubbed "Best of Fest" and described as
"Some of the best shorts from 11 years of the festival, take a trip back in time enjoying again some of the all-time favorites!"
See the schedule in full on comic-con.org.

Exclusively
announced on the TRAVELLING MAN FACEBOOK page - the best and my favourite comic book shop - my short documentary A FILM BY ABIGAIL will screen at the world renowned and highly anticipated SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON 2014! It is in the Official Selection of the San Diego International Children's Film Festival on 27th of July. If you're unfamiliar with SDCC, this is the number one event where huge announcements/panels are held for TV, film and comics. Although it's rooted in the science fiction and superhero genres first and foremost, the event has become an annual phenomenon in which celebrities, tv shows, premieres, producers, writers, directors, actors... will all be present and it is the most important popular arts convention in the world. To be a part of it with one of my films is astounding. As a comic book reader who (and will still this year) wait for the major trailers/announcements trying to one up each other, cliche or not, it is a dream come true to have my work there. To give you an idea of its magnitude and cross-form appeal here are some of the illustrious sponsors: AMC, Warner Bros, MTV, Nintendo, Showtime, Marvel, DC Entertainment, Xbox and Sony Pictures.
...this year presents many new shorts, as well as favorites celebrating the past decade of the festival. The festival features creative, exciting, and imaginative short films from around the world: animation, live action, and documentary... films from the United States, Canada, Italy, Hungary, Japan, Australia, Singapore, Spain, and beyond."

'A Film By Abigail' recently screened at WonderCon 2014, the sister event from Comic-Con International, the WonderCon Anaheim International Children's Film Festival and also at the 25th Internationales Film Festival Emden/Norderney in Germany as the opener of a British showcase of work curated by the London Short Film Festival. In addition to the San Diego Comic-Con screening, I have decided to coincide the event with the film finally releasing online publicly as well!
Some other quick notes before you leave... my science fiction short film MARS-II screens in Detroit (USA) in the Official Selection of the Detcon1 Film Festival in a few days on Saturday 19th of July at 7:14pm as part of 'Science Fiction & Fantasy Shorts #4'.

Also, following my blog about three art film commissions on the horizon, I have now successfully completed production on them. Phew! The first of which is completed and online (see left), a documentary for my 'Videos For Artists' web series, shot at BARBICAN CENTRE. My film for 'Filthy Lucre: Lost In The Nameless City' where I interpreted London's urban spaces with video/photography screened
at the event a few days ago and was met with a resounding ovation from the audience. I will be writing a separate blog about the making of the film very soon, sharing images of the process and research behind it, as it developed from ideas into a finished piece of work - - - I returned from Denmark about a week ago, and having gone there to shoot two films, I returned with FOUR!! I shot at a rarely captured place called Vallo Castle, dance on a beautiful Copenhagen beach and at a converted Chapel, now a dance studio: Danse Kapellet. There'll be more on these exciting finished or near completed film projects in an upcoming blog post.

MARS-II  AWARDED  OPENING  FILM  &
OFFICIAL  SELECTION  IN  TORONTO

Without further ado... I can finally announce that MARS-II, my MA graduation short film, is a part of the Official Selection for Canada's premiere genre event Monsters & Martians Science Fiction Film Festival! It takes place from the 14th-17th of November 2013 in the cinema city of Toronto, home to the highly regarded Toronto International Film Festival. It was absolutely smashing for the film to be accepted and then I recieved more news a week ago - that we will be OPENING the film festival packaged with feature The Cosmonaut!
"Has 'The Cosmonaut' discovered the future of filmmaking?"
- TWITCH on 'The Cosmonaut'
In other news, we sadly didn't win a Golden Blaster at The National Irish Science Fiction Film Awards. It was an honour to be a part of it, being one of only ten films selected internationally. There's hopefully (ideally, optimistically) still more on the horizon for MARS-II in terms of screenings, festivals etc. as we move towards the end of 2013 and I'll be sharing the news if/when it comes. Thanks for reading and thank you for supporting a film that has now been screened all around the world in USA, India, South Africa and the UK! AND... keep an eye out for my written interview about MARS-II with Champion Up North, who screened the film at their event last month, the Hush Hush Film Night [The Base] in Leeds. I discuss the film's shooting, themes, influences and all sorts. There's even a few anecdotes... it's really quite revealing.

'MARS-II'  Invited  to  'Hush  Hush  Film  Night'  in  Leeds  [10/09/2013]

MARS-II  Invited  to
Hush  Hush  Film  Night / The  Base

Hush Hush Film Night logo
Hello stranger and welcome to my blog. As I type... the rain beats against the window, a child is angry they've been taken to Costa after a hard day at school and that machine used to make smoothies or "ice coolers" is just really really unnecessarily noisy. The summer has clearly ran away and the refreshing British weather is back!

It's always really rewarding to be accepted into a festival or event, the feeling of validation from another filmmaker or judge that they're saying "YES" we want your film and "YES" we want you to represent us - it's truly generous and uplifting. Though I've found recently, it can feel even better when someone discovers and approaches you of their own accord. A few weeks ago the HUSH HUSH FILM NIGHT e-mailed me about my body of work and requested to screen MARS-II at their event on the 26th of September this month! The evening event is set up to help expose and celebrate Leeds-based and affiliated filmmakers with currently six films set to screen (more TBA). Hush Hush will take place at music/visual arts studio THE BASE and is ran by Champion Up North who aim to "support the professional development of musicians and artists in Leeds".

In addition to the screening, I'll be doing an interview with them that'll be published on their website in the Meet The Filmmakers section sometime before the event occurs. The film is returning to Leeds where it was produced after the recent exotic screenings in India at 'A Short Evening With Films' and in South Africa at Celludroid Film Festival.

KEEP YOUR EYE OUT FOR ANOTHER ANNOUNCEMENT SOON... MARS-II HAS BEEN NOMINATED FOR AN AWARD!

MARS-II  in  Official  Selection  for  Snake  Alley  Festival  of  Film !

Picture
Big news! I'm pleased to (finally) announce that MARS-II, the graduation film I directed, has landed at another American festival! Following on from Boston in February, it has become a part of the Official Selection at the Snake Alley Festival of Film! The short film is within a competitive 'SCI-FI' category and has encouragingly gone through a few rounds of short-listing to reach the fest.

Sadly there aren't currently many more specific details to report on, but you can read about the Iowa festival as a whole HERE. You can also head over to their OFFICIAL PAGE on Facebook to support the festival and keep up to date with it's news. Plus, if you haven't already, please check out the MARS-II Facebook page to support the film and maybe give us a 'LIKE'! More details will be released soon when I have them...

Abigail  Screening  in  New York  City!!!

A  Film  By  Abigail
Is  Screening  In  New  York  City!!!

Picture
I'm delighted to announce that my short documentary A FILM BY ABIGAIL will be screening in New York City in 2013! The news came to me from the EPIPHANY CHILDREN'S FILM FESTIVAL  last week.

The festival is curated and ran by The Epiphany School and it features live-action short films, animation and documentary that is not only suitable but aimed at young children as an audience.

It's important to highlight that the film is sadly not In Competition at the festival but will be screened as Out Of Competition to the pupil's of the school "in filmmaking classes throughout the year as a way to show students what current filmmakers are creating". The film will be alongside other films of merit that didn't succeed in finding a slot for competing at the festival but did enough to impress the judges to gain a place in the school's "art curriculum" (and that's another direct quote!) ... Yes you've read correctly (I had to re-read when they told me), the film will be one of a series of works to be screened to expose the minds of kids in New York to the many forms of international cinema! That's pretty crazy and very flattering - it more than makes up for what was essentially a rejection! And because of this good news, I've also created a new poster, debuting above.

To keep up to date with my work, you can follow me on Twitter: @paul00vernon

The film has previously screened at BAFTA London, Bradford International Film Festival (Filmmakers' Weekend) and was a part of the Official Selection at the SLEEPWALKERS International Student & Short Film Festival (a part of the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival). There is a lot in the pipeline for more potential platforms for the film and I hope to deliver more news soon about A FILM BY ABIGAIL - a film that doesn't stop surprising me.

MARS-II  officially  Selected  For  the  Boston Sci-Fi  Film  Festival

Picture
I'm super happy to announce that MARS-II (2012) has been officially selected for the 38th Boston Science Fiction Film Festival commencing February the 8th to the 18th, 2013!!!

The event has ran since the mid-70s and in it's contemporary form it lasts for 10 days with: feature films, shorts, documentaries and animation films. That all leads up to the " 'THON " (the original format of the fest), which is a 24-hour film marathon highlighting classic films and 2013 festival highlights. It looks like a very fun, good-spirited and communal event that'll be brilliant for the film to be a part of.

I couldn't find the prize categories for 2013 but looking at last year's there's quite a few that the selected films will be vying for, such as: BEST SPACE MOVIE, BEST ACTOR, BEST DIRECTOR, BEST EDITING, BEST ENSEMBLE ACTING, BEST SCREENPLAY and BEST SCORE. Personally, I have my greedy sights on the ENSEMBLE and SPACE awards, but we'll see... we don't want to get ahead of ourselves, it's just great to be in the festival and competition; over & out!

"It has been a really difficult process. We have had more films and better quality than any other year. The level of expertise by the filmmakers and their creativity has been incredible!"
