A Film By Abigail & DV45 to Screen At Arts Festival with 'Q&A'Coming off the heels of A FILM BY ABIGAIL being shown in New York City, I'm pleased to announce that the film is also now slated to be playing a lot closer to home, where I currently live in Royston (Hertfordshire) at the Royston Arts Festival 2013. The film will be followed by a 'Q&A' and ending with the premiere of my experimental film DV45. I'm very pleased that the festival wants to include DV45, as it's a film that's been hard to place; discovering platforms which are appropriate or risk-worthy has been difficult. It's request to be included in the proceedings has felt like an achievement in itself, not to mention the 20-30 minute slot that my time at the festival is currently scheduled for. The theme of the 2013 festival is "small world" and I believe that these films lend themselves to a program that is reflecting that. The two films are very different, but I've realised that they perhaps have a strong connection? I produced both of them quite close together, in an MA module that was encouraging experimentation and they each take place in only one location; at my childhood home in Leicestershire and the other at my then current home in Leeds. Was I studying my very own "small world" through the films? If so, they are an absolute microcosm of the actual world - hardly even a grain of sand in the desert perhaps. Even so, I think I've discovered a little more about what I made with these notions. I'll also be making a video of highlights for the festival and judging the music entries to accompany it. The festival has hosted a Henry Moore exhibition, invited the dreaded Daleks in 2012, as well as notable novelists, journalists, musicians, illustrators and composers for workshops and events.

A new page "Sketches | Self-Portraits" can now be found in the OTHER WORK section of the site. I'm putting drawings in there that have occurred throughout my creative processes on films. They vary in type & theme - some are bigger or smaller, colourful or darker. They're all expressions of mood whilst working on a project; perhaps I'm stuck how to continue or an image sparks off of another image? I don't want to lose the picture I see in my head briefly, so it ends up being rendered usually with some exquisite children's felt tip pens... with hopes of being re-created much more vividly with better tools another time. Other occasions though, I'll sit down with a definite idea rather than a spontaneous one; it'll often be associated with symmetry & shapes, eyes or faces, then I see how colour fits into what I've done on the paper. I end up with a picture that reflects something of myself & the film. This seems to be an important part of when I'm making a film - if a little useless for the film! It may just pass the time or perhaps help push out new ideas. The pictures are random in appearance & sporadic (or maybe these descriptions are for the onlooker to decide rather than me?) but are NOT me rallying for a career as a painter (!) but a personal part of my process as a filmmaker I'd like to share. It's something I'm doing more frequently & I think it could be a good way to use excess energy when you're struggling to inject a spark into a film or into your creative mind. I have no idea if other filmmakers do this too, but I'd urge anyone having difficulty creatively to do something similar & let themselves develp a picture freely alongside their film r to get a film moving in your head. |
Thank you for reading. I'm writing this blog as an active artist, filmmaker and the curator of my Vortex Museum.
