Have you heard of the exciting emerging band 'The Cave Birds'...? Well you should have. After an excellent live performance at their single launch for 'In Love From Afar' at the Brudenell Social Club (Leeds) and with a growing fan-base, you'll justifiably be hearing of them very soon. Creatively moving from strength to strength, playing with a style that feels comfortably recognisable ('Echo & The Bunnymen' come to mind), yet bursting with originality for today's musical landscape as a fusion of eras to the ears come 'The Cave Birds'. They'll leave you believing you're listening to sure-fire hits, especially with the latest 'In Love From Afar' that's as catching a song to listen to as it is to musically respect. Footage of the single launch is currently being worked on, released soon. Image examples can be seen below. A new page "Sketches | Self-Portraits" can now be found in the OTHER WORK section of the site. I'm putting drawings in there that have occurred throughout my creative processes on films. They vary in type & theme - some are bigger or smaller, colourful or darker. They're all expressions of mood whilst working on a project; perhaps I'm stuck how to continue or an image sparks off of another image? I don't want to lose the picture I see in my head briefly, so it ends up being rendered usually with some exquisite children's felt tip pens... with hopes of being re-created much more vividly with better tools another time. Other occasions though, I'll sit down with a definite idea rather than a spontaneous one; it'll often be associated with symmetry & shapes, eyes or faces, then I see how colour fits into what I've done on the paper. I end up with a picture that reflects something of myself & the film. This seems to be an important part of when I'm making a film - if a little useless for the film! It may just pass the time or perhaps help push out new ideas. The pictures are random in appearance & sporadic (or maybe these descriptions are for the onlooker to decide rather than me?) but are NOT me rallying for a career as a painter (!) but a personal part of my process as a filmmaker I'd like to share. It's something I'm doing more frequently & I think it could be a good way to use excess energy when you're struggling to inject a spark into a film or into your creative mind. I have no idea if other filmmakers do this too, but I'd urge anyone having difficulty creatively to do something similar & let themselves develp a picture freely alongside their film r to get a film moving in your head. 'DV45', an experimental film blurring documentary and fiction filmmaking. Shot within a domestic setting with a very basic but expressive DV camera.
